This is a new series, I will listen to all the 80s albums released by the decade's artists and judge the songs that were not singles (in the UK) from an album.  I will give my opinion whether the remaining songs were just fillers or could have been singles.  How many singles I can find will determine the final rating of how good the album is as a whole.  Below 49% = Poor/50-64% = Average/65-79% = Very Good/80-100% = Excellent.  There will be a different artist each blog.  I am a big fan of all the artists I review in this series, so I have to think hard if the song would wow the chart public, even if they are my favourite songs!

DURAN DURAN (#3) (1981) -

Tracks -
Girls On Film/Planet Earth/Anyone Out There/To The Shore/Careless Memories/Night Boat/Sound Of Thunder/Friends Of Mine/Tel Aviv.

Singles -
Planet Earth (#12)/Careless Memories (#37)/Girls On Film (#5).

Potential Singles -
Anyone Out There - A slow burner but catchy chorus akin to Planet Earth.

Friends Of Mine - One of my favourites, guitar solos, sing-a-long lyrics and catchy chorus.

Fillers -
To The Shore (Dull from beginning to end)/Night Boat (Eerie but doesn't grab me)/Sound Of Thunder (Mostly instrumental, musically like Girls On Film but second best in all departments)/Tel Aviv (Weird instrumental).

Average album! 5 singles from 9 tracks  55.5/100.

RIO (#2) (1982) -

Tracks -

Rio/My Own Way/Lonely In Your Nightmare/Hungry Like The Wolf/Hold Back The Rain/New Religion/Last Chance On The Stairway/Save A Prayer/The Chauffeur.

Singles -
My Own Way (#14)/Hungry Like The Wolf (#5)/Save A Prayer (#2)/Rio (#9).

Potential Singles -
Lonely In Your Nightmare - The chorus alone could carry this to be a hit.

Hold Back The Rain - Powerful chorus with interesting Electronic backing.

New Religion - Loved this on the live Arena album, great vocals and funky bass.

Last Chance On The Stairway - Fast uptempo track fits in well with the album's theme.

Fillers -
The Chauffeur (Mysterious and dark, a favourite of mine but nothing catchy to dent the charts sadly).

Excellent album! 8 singles from 9 tracks.   88.8/100.

Tracks -
The Reflex/New Moon On Monday/(I'm Looking For) Cracks In The Pavement/I Take The Dice/Of Crime And Passion/Union Of The Snake/Shadows On Your Side/Tiger Tiger/The Seventh Stranger.

Singles -
Union Of The Snake (#3)/New Moon On Monday (#9)/The Reflex (#1).

Potential Singles -
I Take The Dice - Quirky in a Thomas Dolby/Howard Jones kind of way, could be a contender.

Of Crime And Passion - Punchy track and powerful enough to be a hit single.

Fillers -
(I'm Looking For) Cracks In The Pavement (I'm looking for more!)/Shadows On Your Side (The poor sister to Union Of The Snake)/Tiger Tiger (A relaxed instrumental, that's all)/The Seventh Stranger (Not sure what this is supposed to be!).

Average album! 5 singles from 9 tracks.  55.5/100.

SO RED THE ROSE (#30) (1985) (as ARCADIA) -

Tracks -
Election Day/Keep Me In The Dark/Goodbye Is Forever/The Flame/Missing/Rose Arcana/The Promise/El Diablo/Lady Ice.

Singles -
Election Day (#7)/Goodbye Is Forever (#0)/The Promise (#37)/The Flame (58).

Potential Singles -
Keep Me In The Dark - Starts like a movie soundtrack with a middle eastern feel and James Bond effects, but the chorus just about carries it, quite mellow.

El Diablo - Epic track, includes some very sweet panpipe sounds (I think), beautiful, melancholic, atmospheric, would have made a great video!

Fillers -
Missing (Actually a favourite of mine, similar to Save A Prayer, mystical and mysterious but not a single)/Rose Arcana (Overlong instrumental!)/Lady Ice (another great track if it was for a movie, but wouldn't catch on radio).

Very good album! 6 singles from 9 tracks. 66.6/100..

NOTORIOUS (#16) (1986) -

Tracks -
Notorious/American Science/Skin Trade/A Matter Of Feeling/Hold Me/Vertigo(Do The Demolition)/So Misled/Meet El Presidente/Winter Marches On/Proposition.

Singles -
Notorious (#7)/Skin Trade (#22)/Meet El Presidente (#24).

Potential Singles -
Hold Me - More musically rocky than previous Duran Duran tracks.

Proposition - Pure Pop Rock, like it!

Fillers -
American Science (Not great)/A Matter Of Feeling (This one just passed me by)/Vertigo (Do The Demolition) (Repetitive and unremarkable)/So Misled (Pure filler!)/Winter Marches On (Quite dull).

Average album! 5 singles from 10 tracks.   50/100.

BIG THING (#15) (1988) -

Tracks -
Big Thing/I Don't Want Your Love/All She Wants Is/Too Late Marlene/Drug(It's Just A State Of Mind)/Do You Believe In Shame?/Palomino/Interlude One/Land/Flute Interlude/The Edge Of America/Lake Shore Driving.

Singles -
I Don't Want Your Love (#14)/All She Wants Is (#9)/Do You Believe In Shame? (#30).

Potential Singles -
Big Thing - Great song and opener to the album, group chanted vocals with a great beat.

The Edge Of America - Reminds me of early A-ha, nice song, possible hit.

Fillers -
Too Late Marlene (Slow dull filler)/Drug (It's Just A State Of Mind) (Great title, song could have been so much better)/Palomino (Movie background music)/Interlude One (A crazy 33 seconds piano?)/Land (A poor James Bond theme!)/Flute Interlude (Yes, 33 seconds of flute?)/Lake Shore Driving (A funky instrumental and a favourite of mine, but unfortunately not chart material).

Poor album!  5 singles from 12 tracks.   41.6/100.
